The "Happy Birthday Daddy" Mechanism Running Without the Top-WorksI am often asked how everything works as people try to peer into the inner workings of a completed project. I took a minute to make a video of the mechanism elements as they relate to the motion of the characters. I hope that the curious find it helpful to figure things out.

Birch plywood is used for the top, bottom, cams, and wheels because of its strength and warping resistance. Cam followers and dowels are made from maple because of its strength and the piping around the base was made by steaming a piece of whitewood into a circular shape. The crank handle is made from a birch knob on an arm made from Jatoba. Linkages between the moving mechanism and the children are made of brass and stainless wire. |
