The Story of "The Invisible Audiophile"
This automata was inspired by a Fourteen Ball Toy Co. piece (Paul Spooner/Matt Smith) circa 1988 called "Invisible and Alone". It has been featured at the Cabaret Mechanical Theatre and can be found in a Youtube Video. It depicts an empty chair in front of a small table with a cup of coffee and two biscuits. A spoon in the cup stirs the coffee in a circular motion. I always found this piece magical and wanted to pay homage to its creativity by making something similar myself. I thought for a long time what I could make that created the same whimsy utilized the invisibility of the subject. After discarding some pitifully poor thoughts I cam up with the "The Invisible Audiophile" automata. You know the invisible character is present because the chair rocks with the music as they hold a cup of coffee in their hand. I like to think he is a bit of a romantic, although listening to "Mr. Cellophane" from the Broadway musical Chicago might be an obvious selection for his phonograph! I think we all feel invisible at times. |
