The Background Story of "Swimming With the Dolphins"
I grew up watching flipper save someone in distress every week on network television. I even had a friend I nicknamed "Flipper" because he squeaked when he laughed like my TV friend. Who could see then how quickly the world would change to see dolphins in a different light. They moved from aquatic clowns to empathic sensory mammals with language and intelligence.
As time passed, as humans we became fascinated with these strangely cute mammals. It became the vogue to "swim with the dolphins" as part of destination vacations around the globe. This automata project is a glimpse of how a young lad might feel while he undertook this experience. He delights in leaping in sync with his companion. You can sense his excitement, but I wonder what the dolphins think of us. Maybe their squeal is a satirical laugh heard by every creature in the ocean. What if "The Hitch-hikers ' Guide to the Galaxy" by Douglas Adams was right with the suggestion that we may not be the supreme mammal on the planet, we just can't figure it out. “So long and thanks for all the fish” is a line from the book that was spoken by the dolphins before they left Earth. The dolphins wanted to say goodbye to planet Earth before it was destroyed and thank the planet for all it had provided. All very introspective of course but the little lad sure looks to be having fun! |
