My Design Philosophy

Designing and making pieces of kinetic art from wood is a satisfying blend of my engineering and woodworking interests. My contemporary automata are meant to be somewhat whimsical and usually depict situations involving people or animals. I usually build automata that employ hand-cranked mechanisms that animate a scene so the viewer becomes part of the experience. I strive to create designs that are both amusing and fascinating to watch. I try to stay true to a simple form of the art using wood, brass rods, and wires to manufacture my pieces.
There are many great examples of work to discover on the web. I most admire the automata work of Philip Lowndes. It is a great melding of whimsy and machine. His site is at http://www.lowbot.co.uk/
As I complete pieces I add webpages to my site with photos and descriptions of the pieces I have made. While much of my early work has been mimicking the work of others to learn the craft, I now create more original work of my own design.
