The Story of "Snowbirds"
Every year thousands of Canadians flock to more southern climates to escape the cold winter weather. In Canada we call these people "Snowbirds" since they mimic the habits of migratory wildfowl. But these folks don't normally fly but clog the US turnpikes with campers, cars, and trailers every fall and spring as they travel.
Bert and Maude used to be one such couple, but they soon tried of the traffic, border crossing and cost. So Bert knocked together a few rudimentary aerothopers in their garage and they have adopted a new way to travel. Maude is leisure ready in her track suit and clutches her handbag defensively in the manner of many seniors. Wearing a leather aviator cap and getting a fresh perm before the trip helps her manage her hair in the wind, and a pair of Bernie's welding goggles keeps her eyes from tearing.
Bernie, on the other hand, is eager to hit the golf course. He is sporting his Canadian Tiley hat, Tiley khaki shorts, white compression socks, his 15 year old golf shoes and a pastel golf shirt Maude found at a garage sale. Of course Bernie is left the task of navigating and constantly surveys the terrain to maintain direction. Cloudy, rainy, weather is a big problem so the trip must be planned carefully.
Their luggage is towed behind on a group of helium filled ballots. The trip must be done hastily before they loose their buoyancy. They must have left hurriedly as it appears that no one latched the cat carrier where Maude's beloved cat Ryder rides during the trip, although he doesn't seem concerned. He is keeping his eye out for high flying sparrows. Hopefully they all have safe trip and their little piece of paradise in a trailer camp near Tampa is still standing when they get there.
NOTE: As a curious fact of authenticity the map of the northeastern United States that on the surface of the enclosure was purchased at a travel centre on the New York Thruway on the way to Automatcon 2018! Hows that for for an extra effort!
