I’ve been scoping out a couple of automata projects I have in mind this week. While I was running errrands I came across something I have been looking for some time.
When I was at Automatacon this spring I saw a delightful piece built into a glass jar. I instantly thought I should like to make one some day. Getting back into Automata things I identifed a subject and started looking for a container. Internet searches were proving less than satisfactory. The most promising thing I found was a carboy for beer making. As luck would have it a stumbled upon this container while shopping for something else this week. So now I can begin detailed design work knowing the size! So watch this spot. I may work on another project first!

Spent last Saturday in Pickering at the OWCA Magic in Wood carving competition and show. As well as my usual setup, seen below, I instructed a quick guide to making simple automata.
I will be hosting s seminar on making automata at the OWCA carving competition at the Pickering Recreation Centre on Valley Farm Road on Saturday October the 20th. The show is called “Magic in Wood” and more information can be found on the OWCA website. I believe the seminar will be at 1:00 pm.
The seminar is designed to help people with woodworking skills take the leap into making automata by discussing simple mechanisms and fabrication techniques. If you are in the neighbourhood and always wondered about making automata then stop by. Come watch learn and ask questions. It should be both informative and entertaining. Al it’s suddenly getting to be a little colder this week and my penguin friends began to complain about the cold. Can you believe it? Anyway, I took pity on them and I issued hats and scarves to the gang. So hopefully this will keep them happy until parade time.
